A study of the notions and functions of art in global and local public spheres in Hong Kong and Zurich
How to investigate/approach transcultural und transdisciplinary topics on the basis of an exemplary case study. How to generate glocal knowledge/information through action-oriented, practically embedded, and artistic strategies. The research focuses on visualisation strategies in urban public spheres and in various media, and on the multifaceted potentials of such strategies. Adopting artistic, theoretical, and transdisciplinary approaches, we aim to trace artistic visualisation strategies in different (cultural, spatial, and media) contexts. In cooperating with various partners in Hong Kong, we explore and intervene in sites in Hong Kong and Zurich. The key artistic and scientific topics of our transcultural and transdisciplinary study are: 1) Notions of art and their diversity 2) Formats and forms of art practices 3) Physical public space: the city landscape 4) Virtual public space: the media landscape
Methodological approach: Transdisciplinary, transcultural, action-oriented
Adopting artistic, theoretical, and transdisciplinary approaches, we trace artistic visualisation strategies in different (cultural, spatial, and media) contexts. Our work will involve artistic and scientific research and educational contexts at Universities in Zurich and Hong Kong.
Meta-observations
Transcultural and transdisciplinary work requires a fundamental acceptance of difference as well as constant self-evaluation and debate on the basic theoretical and practical framework. Thus, the research process must be paralleled by a stringent meta-discourse and critical reflection on the issues and topics investigated.
Cooperation Zurich – Hong Kong
Close cooperation with partners in Hong Kong form an essential part of our research. Communication with our partners in Hong Kong is necessary in all project phases. The need for cooperation and the educational linkage of our research provides an ideal setting for experimenting with the “Virtual Tunnel” linking Zurich and Hong Kong. Research visits in Hong Kong and in Zurich allows the project teams to acquire first-hand field experience through cooperative and transcultural research.
